Hello fellow sketchbookers!
I recently bought some new fish for our pond, and have been cleaning it up and improving the habitat over the past few weeks. It’s now my favourite place to sit in the garden, and of course I have to sketch there sometimes too! This week’s sketches are brought to you from the comfort of the picnic bench by the pond!
Plein Air Project - Weeks 34 and 35: In the Garden
After last week’s urban sketches, I thought I would get back to some nature sketching!
I enjoyed the challenge of sketching the pond with its murky dark water and bright green contrasting plants. I think the water could have been even darker, so I will be braver about that next time! Still, I was pleased with the simplistic feel of this sketch, and liked the accidental watercolour blooms of paint in the water.
To the right of the pond is our Fig Tree, which is a bit of a rambling mess at the moment - the leaves are starting to unfurl at the end of the branches, so I thought it would be nice to capture that now and then sketch again later in the summer to compare. Again, a really simple sketch to just try and record the feel of the Spring sky and early signs of life in the Fig! The weather is much more changeable today, so I am glad I made the most of it while it was nice!
Sketching Online with AiR
Every week, I cohost an online class led by
and last week I had the pleasure of joining her on zoom to sketch unnoticed corners of our homes, inspired by the wonderful Keri Smith book ‘How to be an Explorer of the World’. Here are my sketches from the session. It was really fun seeing everyone’s quiet corners getting some attention, and a reminder that there really is never any shortage of subjects to sketch!!
Online Sketchbook flip through
Last week I promised another sketchbook tour, so here it is! No talking in this one, just a flip through of another completed sketchbook - an A5 size Seawhite of Brighton Travellers Journal, which takes a range of media pretty well.
This sketchbook is mostly full of sketches from an online class I used to run at Artist in Residence, called Sketchbook Adventure where I would curate reference photo’s of a particular location or theme each week, and we would do quick and loose timed sketches. There are also a few other online sessions I attended as a participant with the following artists!
Until next week, happy sketching!
