The Revolve Project: Week 6 Sketches
Hello everyone!
I'm very happy to continue my wednesday newsletter chronicling the Revolve Project. This dedicated space is proving invaluable in structuring and documenting my 52 sketches as I approach the planned exhibition at the end of next summer.
This Week's Sketch: Sunny Days and Local Landscapes
After last week's rainy sketch, I was lucky to enjoy a sunny day for Week 6 – albeit still quite windy! I'm continuing to stay close to home for these weekly sketches, which has led me to ponder: should I limit the project to the farm, or venture further afield? With a year ahead of me, I'm keeping my options open. For now, I'm focusing on honing my plein air techniques and building confidence. Who knows? I might soon be exploring the Somerset Levels, River Tone, Bridgwater Canal, or the Quantocks AONB with my sketching kit – all just a bike ride away!
A Walk Through Home Field
To reach this week's sketching spot, I wandered through Home Field, a meadow we've planted with bird-friendly seed crops. It's been fascinating to watch this field progress through growing, flowering, and now the seeding phase. Along the way, I startled a couple of pheasants and spotted various birds enjoying the cover and food. Next time, I'll bring my binoculars for better bird identification!
Notes on my Plein Air Kit
I'm really enjoying my compact sketching kit:
Kuretake watercolor set: Though not the smallest, its lightweight card box and large, easy-to-use paint pans make it ideal.
Waterbrush: I've switched back to this for its convenience, eliminating the need for a separate water pot.
Mobile Studio Setup
For those curious about my on-location setup, here is a quick pic:
A camping chair from Decathlon
'Gorilla pod' tripod wrapped around one arm
Bag holding sketching supplies
Jackons A6 sketchpad, Kuretake paint palette, fountain pen and waterbrush
Small cloth for brush cleaning in the chair's cupholder
Week 6 Sketch
As I hope to do every week, I've included a short video of this week's process. While the Gorilla Pod held my phone fairly well, it did pick up some movement. I might need to upgrade to a proper tripod for future sessions!
Looking Ahead
As soon as I wrap up this post, I'll be heading out for Week 7's sketch. Stay tuned for next week's update!
