Another Sketchbook Completed!
Pith Kabosu - My Review
The sketchbook tour video shows my recently completed Pith Kabosu A6 sketchbook, which I filled over the course of 6 months. Here's my honest take on whether this pricey little book was worth it.
What I sketched in this sketchbook:
Online sketching sessions
Inktober
Garden sketches
Art prompts
Experiments and swatches
What I liked: The paper is generally pretty good! It handled everything I threw at it - watercolour, coloured pencils, mixed media experiments. The lay-flat binding is great for spreads, and after six months of abuse, it's holding up just fine.
What I didn’t like: Fountain pen ink feathers more than I'd like (annoying for me since I love sketching with ink), it's bulkier than expected for an A6, and to be honest, It's expensive enough that I felt a bit precious about "wasting" pages on experimental stuff—especially at first.
Bottom Line: Would I buy again? No, I don’t think so. I prefer white, smoother paper, that takes fountain pens better—for the same money, I would choose the Stillman and Birn softcover sketchbooks like the Delta, Epsilon, Alpha and Beta versions.
This Week’s Diary Comic
In This week’s brilliant comics class with Jane Porter we were looking at framing. Using Wally Wood's ‘22 panels that always work’ as reference really helped me break out of my usual boring panel layouts—though I found Tor Freeman version of the same concept more relatable and accessible.
I chose to document my eldest’s current lack of preparation for his upcoming Duke of Edinburgh expedition for the subject matter—I think I could actually make a full 22 panel version just from this topic!
Apologies for the difficult-to-read text in the comic page—I made the mistake of going over the pencil with a soft colour pencil that smudged when I tried to rub out the pencil beneath - I will go for ink next time!
Daily(ish) Sketch Journal
Here are a few more sketches from my daily practice—nothing fancy, just everyday things I am trying to capture throughout the week :)
I hope you have had a good week and wish you a lovely weekend!
