20. Sketching Round Up
Autumn vibes, back to fountain pens, and some faces!
Hello fellow sketchers!
I hope you are all having a good weekend. Here is this week’s roundup of what I have been up to in my sketchbook.
Autumn in the Air
It feels like we are fully heading into Autumn now here in England, with cooler nights and falling daylight hours. I do love this time of year along with Spring, for capturing the season in my sketchbook!
I am trying to capture the tired, yellowing colours in the fields, and making the most of painting leaves on the trees before they all get blown away.
It’s also nice to zoom in and capture the details.
Back to Fountain Pens
This week I decided to change up my sketching tools. After using a fineliner for a while, I missed the wetter, less predictable lines of my fountain pens. I cleaned and refilled my Lamy Safari with brown ink. I chose brown because it fits the season well - it's warmer and less harsh than black.

Face Time
Recently, I've taken on a new challenge: sketching faces. It's been rather intimidating, but I'm making progress. I’m a member an online group called Artists in Residence, which just launched a series of challenges with embroidered badges as rewards.
The first challenge is "Portrait Party." To earn the badge, you need to complete at least 20 out of about 30 prompts. So far, I've finished 4 sketches. It's been a great exercise that's pushing me beyond my usual quick and loose sketching style.
I was particularly pleased with my sketch of someone sleeping (this is of my youngest son) and am inspired to keep going with this challenge to not only earn the badge, but to force myself into sketching a subject I usually shy away from.
