Hello fellow sketchers!
I hope this newsletter finds you well. It's been a busy week, and I'm excited to share some updates with you all.
Back to School Blues
My boys are back at school, and our home is once again a bit hectic as we get into the swing of early mornings, school runs, and after-school clubs. It's always a bittersweet time - saying goodbye to the lazier days of summer, but welcoming the structure and new adventures that the school year brings.
Daily Sketch Journal: Capturing the Changing Season
I have to admit, I fell a bit behind on my daily sketching routine this week. But instead of beating myself up about it, I decided to use this as an opportunity to focus on something that has caught my attention over the past week - the changing season.
My sketches over the summer were really about capturing my daily life and little adventures over the holiday, but this week it felt nice to have a break from that and observe and capture the subtle shifts in nature as summer gives way to Autumn. The first hints of colour in the leaves, the bountiful berries in the hedgerows.
I've been thinking about starting a nature journal, but figured that might be too much to keep up with, so I plan to simply incorporate elements of nature journaling into my daily quick sketching practice. I am still tempted to have a dedicated sketchbook for nature journaling, but for now I am enjoying the variation of daily life and nature in my sketchbook :)

Summer Sketchbook
Speaking of sketchbooks, here’s a quick video flip-through of my daily sketches for August. It's a lovely visual record of the last month of summer, filled with memories, and a reminder to keep going with the practice!
Revolve Project: Week 4 Update
This is my week 4 sketch for the Revolve project - a year long project where I am committed to making a Plein Air sketch every week.
This week, my youngest son Ozzy joined me. It started raining as we walked out to our planned spot, but luckily we could take shelter under the veranda of one of our Safari Tents (I run a glamping site). I am already wondering why I picked a Plein Air challenge for this project - felt like a good idea in July when it was warmer and generally sunny! I will have to think of some other places I can sketch outside with some cover from rain as we head into Winter!
I made a little video of the sketch if you’d like to watch:
Starting next week, I'll be sharing updates on the Revolve Project every Wednesday, as I would like this to be a separate newsletter/vlog as a record of the project online - an added challenge I have set myself is to use this weekly sketch as a way to improve my videography too - so I will be sharing a video of the experience along with the finished sketch in that post :)
The Sketching Sisters 🎨
Over on the Sketching Sister’s substack, which I run with my sister
- we have our latest prompt list up and running for September. We also shared a roundup of our previous month’s prompts - Postcards of Summer. If you would like to see us sharing all our sketches from that challenge, you can do so here…That's all for this week, thanks for reading!
Happy sketching!
Emma.

Such a lovely update! It’s fantastic to see your August sketch journal – great idea to incorporate some nature journaling into it! I’m already thinking my days might feel less exciting now that we’re back in a routine, so I might give that a try every now and then too. Also, I loved your video with Ozzy!
